Artist Statement
My work starts with affection for the way we make our nests. Recording with paint and other materials, making art is kind of nest building in itself. It is a kind of building that is within my power: "soft architecture".
My paintings process feelings of displacement and longing for connection. Having moved across the country, old houses, old furniture become metaphors for identity and belonging. My subjects are often prosaic but carry some connection to community and the weight of history.
I’m interested in how certain light and shadows can activate and build a sense of time.
I work in acrylic because it’s fast and I can feel a sense of connection from the visual to my body when I move the paint around.
